Background Information

Ready-to-Run Software has adopted a ``uniform installation structure'' for all packages that we deliver. Using this structure (and some simple variations of it), you can tailor how and where your packages will be installed.

The basic directory structure that we use is as follows:

\psfig{figure=/misc/figs/dirpic6.ps,width=7in}

Please note that there may be some extra directories attached to $<$install dir$>$ for some packages.

Shareable files are those files which are machine independent and can be shared across many machines in a network. Non-shareable files are machine/architecture specific and may not be shared (except with other hosts with the same architecture).

From this starting point, we give you the flexibility to split the shareable files into a different directory (or a subdirectory with $<$install dir$>$). You may also remove the leading ``s'' from the the shareable directories sinclude, sspool, sbin and slib. This may be used to merge slib-$>$lib and sbin-$>$bin if your shareable and non-shareable files are stored in the same directory, or to make names clearer if your shareable and non-shareable files are not stored together.

We do that for you by default (although you may override it if you want). This is how we install by default (the Smart installation system will create any necessary directories if it has permission to do so) and you will need to make sure that your path includes $<$install_dir$>$/bin:

\psfig{figure=/misc/figs/dirpic5.ps,width=7in}
