Evaluating RTR's FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for IIS 8 and IIS 7.5

Evaluating the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for IIS 8 and  IIS 7.5 is quick and easy.  You need an evaluation license, but you can get one online - it only takes a couple of minutes!

Please note that evaluation licenses have some limitations:

  • Floating Evaluation licenses expire in 30 days.
    • Can only be issued once (if you try to get a new license for your machine, you will receive your original license).
  • Hosted Evaluation licenses expire in 12 hours.
    • Hosted Evaluation licenses may be renewed, however each renewal is for a shorter time period.
  • Floating Evaluation licenses require that you must use the license server.  For detailed information, please see the License Manager page.
  • Always have one subweb group (up to 25 subwebs).
  • May have one to four sites.

If you have a need for special evaluation license (e.g. Node-Locked or larger site/subweb count), please contact us at .

Requirement:  You must use the server native administrator account, user name Administrator, to install the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions in Windows Server 2012, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7. In Windows 7, you may have to activate the user Administrator account in order to use it. You should locate it in Computer Management | System Tools | Local Users and Groups | Users folder. When activating the Administrator account, be sure to set a password to be able to administer the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions.

Please use one of the following sets of steps to install and evaluate the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for IIS 8 and IIS 7.5:

Use these steps to evaluate the FrontPage Server Extensions on a virtual machine

You must use a physical machine to run the license server.  The physical machine does not have to be the physical host of the virtual machine, but the virtual and physical machines must be able to connect to each other via TCP/IP.

To install the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions evaluation, follow these simple steps:

  • Install the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions on your virtual machine
  • Install the license server on your physical machine and retrieve your HostId
  • Get your evaluation license online
  • Install your evaluation license on your physical machine
  • Start the license server on the physical machine
  • Point your virtual server at your physical machine's license server

Here are the detailed steps to accomplish this:

  1. Please uninstall any previous version of the Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions 2002.  (Note: If you have it, is OK to leave FrontPage 2002 installed.)
  2. Download the correct version of the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions for your server
  3. IIS 8 : Download the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for IIS 8.
  4. IIS 7.5: Download the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 for IIS 7.5.
  5. Install them on your virtual machine.  (Please wait until step 11 below before trying to use them to extend any webs.)
  6. Copy the c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50\rlm directory from your virtual machine to the physical machine where you will run the license server.  Alternatively, download rlm.zip and unzip it on your physical machine.  Note that the rlm directory can be installed anywhere, it is not necessary to put it into a "c:\Program Files" directory.
  7. Open a command shell on your physical machine, and use the cd command to navigate to the rlm destination directory you created in the previous step.
  8. In the command shell, run the rlmhostid program, and then record the first of the 12 character HostId groupings that it displays.
    • Example: 000456d87f54 000456d87f53 005845b00001 005845b00005
    • When executing the rlmhostid.exe program, it may report more than one 12 character Host ID grouping.
    • If the first grouping returns a 'Bad Hostid: This HostId appears to be from a Virtual Machine' error, please try the other groupings, in order.
  9. Visit the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions Shopping Cart and get an evaluation license:
    1. Choose "More Info >>" under the "30 Day Evaluation" heading..
    2. Enter your HostId (you cannot change the number of subwebs or floating license type), and click "Add to Cart +".
    3. You will now see your cart.  By default, the # Sites is 1, but you can change it to be any number from 1 to 4; if you do change it, click the "Update Cart" button.
    4. Click the "Checkout" button.
    5. A window pops up with the license.  Highlight the 6 lines that start with SERVER, and hit Ctrl-C (or right-click and choose "Copy") to copy the license to your clipboard.
  10. Create a file named "eval.lic" with your license.  To do this:
    1. In your command shell (still parked in the rlm directory), type "notepad eval.lic" and hit <Enter>.
    2. Allow notepad to create the new file.
    3. Paste your license into the file from the clipboard.
    4. Save the file.
    5. Exit notepad.

    Notes:

    • The name "eval.lic" is just a suggestion.  The important thing is to put your license onto the physical machine in a file that ends in the ".lic" extension; this file must be located in the rlm directory (the same directory as rlm.exe).
    • There is an alternative to cutting and pasting your license: you can visit the License Retrieval page, enter your HostId, click "Download Product", then save the rtr_fpse.lic file into your rlm directory on the physical machine.
  11. In your command shell (still parked in the rlm directory), run "rlm" to start the license server.  RLM outputs a list of license files; make sure your license  file (eval.lic or rtr_fpse.lic) is in the list.
  12. Return to your virtual machine and edit the server extensions' license file to point to your license server:
    1. Start a notepad and edit the file c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\50\rtrfpse.lic
    2. Change the second token on the HOST line from "myLicenseServerHostNameOrIP" to the host name or IP address of the physical machine where your license server is running.
  13. You can now work with the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions.  The FrontPage Server Extensions function just as they did in previous versions.  Please remember that first you need to visit the FrontPage Server Extensions 2002 Administration website to extend your webs; you can access this website by opening the "Microsoft SharePoint Administration" site in the IIS Manager and then hitting the "Browse" link in the Actions pane.

Please visit the License Manager Information page for detailed information, such as the ports used by the license manager and how to run the license manager as a service.

Use these steps to evaluate the FrontPage Server Extensions on a physical machine

Because you are running the FrontPage Server Extensions a physical machine, the easiest procedure is to use the same physical machine to run the license manager.

Note: If you want to use different physical machines to run the FrontPage Server Extensions and the license manager, please use the above virtual machine procedure and pretend that your FrontPage Server Extensions machine is a virtual machine.

To install the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions evaluation, follow these simple steps:

  • Install the RTR FrontPage Server Extensions
